Mark Bowles is Dean and Head of the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics. In this role, he leads one of Australia's AACSB-accredited business schools, overseeing its teaching, research, industry engagement, and strategic partnerships. Mark brings more than 25 years of leadership experience spanning higher education, government, economic policy, workforce development, industry growth, and business strategy.
Prior to joining the University of Tasmania, he served as Acting Chief Executive Officer of Renewables, Climate and Future Industries Tasmania and as Deputy Secretary, Business and Jobs within the Tasmanian Government, where he led portfolios supporting business growth, skills development, workforce capability, trade, migration, advanced manufacturing, science and technology.
An economist by training, Mark has held senior leadership and advisory positions across the public and private sectors, including Chief Economist for the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Interim Chief Executive Officer of Brand Tasmania, and leadership roles within the Department of State Growth and Department of Treasury and Finance.
He has contributed extensively to economic development, public policy, workforce strategy, and industry advancement in Tasmania, including supporting the Premier's Economic and Social Recovery Advisory Council during the COVID-19 recovery period.
Mark is passionate about strengthening connections between universities, industry, government, and communities to create economic opportunity and positive social impact.
He is particularly interested in workforce capability, leadership development, sustainable economic growth, and ensuring higher education graduates are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing global economy.
