Overview
Regulators across Australia are increasingly being called to rethink how decisions are made, how engagement occurs, and how regulatory systems can better support self-determined outcomes for and with First Nations peoples. This NRCoP national event, held at the start of Reconciliation Week, brings together Elly Patira (Essential Services Commission) and Tegan Tembe (IPART) to share practical insights on working with First Nations peoples in co‑regulatory contexts.
Drawing on their organisations’ experience developing and implementing First Nations strategies and co-regulatory approaches with First Nations communities, the discussion will explore how principles such as self‑determination, regulatory inclusion and capability‑building can be embedded into regulatory practice. Designed for regulators on their journey transforming regulatory processes, policies and decision-making with First Nations communities, the session will focus on what has worked, what remains challenging, and how regulators can adapt their authorising environments to support better outcomes
