In 2022, Andrew Pfeiffer PSM and Robin Edmonds PSM responded to a critical gap in workforce inclusivity within the Australian Public Sector (APS) by founding the Public Sector Neurodiversity Community of Practice (CoP).
Despite increasing awareness of the importance of inclusivity and psychosocial safety, neurodivergent employees in the APS continue to face systemic challenges that impact their well-being, limit innovation, and reduce overall productivity. Recognising the need for change, Pfeiffer and Edmonds brought together a diverse network of over 400 individuals from more than 80 agencies to form the CoP.
This case study explores the CoP’s first two years of operation, highlighting its role in fostering inter-agency collaboration, peer support, and shared learning. It also outlines the community’s achievements in raising awareness, building capability, and advocating for inclusive practices across the public sector. The study offers practical recommendations for creating neurodiversity-safe workplaces that value diversity, promote equity, and unlock the full potential of all employees. The CoP stands as a model for how Communities of Practice can drive meaningful cultural change and support a more inclusive future for the APS.
Written by Julia Richardson, this case provides an instructive example of how a community of practice can support employees, foster safe spaces, and help teams thrive while advancing inclusion for neurodivergent public servants. It invites consideration of the conditions that enable inclusive practices in the public sector, including psychological safety, senior sponsorship, peer learning, and collaboration.
