Overview
The progression from team member to a management role requires a broadened skillset.
It means not only maintaining your existing subject matter expertise, but also building additional skills to steward teams through challenges, build productive stakeholder relationships and influence senior leadership. Managers must focus on team over individual performance, balance strategic direction with operational detail and navigate a range of different relationships, work styles and perspectives.
New Managers is a purpose built program designed to support this transition for first-time managers by helping build practical strategies to excel and thrive at this next level of your career. It’s highly interactive, with opportunities for you to connect with and learn from peers from a range of government jurisdictions, departments and agencies in a confidential, high-trust environment.
Cohorts are limited in size to allow adequate time to address individual needs and tackle real-life challenges being faced in the workplace.
Audience
This first-time manager course is suitable for those who:
- are new to leading teams or projects (up to 18 months’ experience)
- have recently been appointed to higher duties with management responsibilities.
Learning outcomes
New Managers provides access to a range of evidence-based ideas and practices that upskill participants to:
- develop a leadership style that can engage productively with a diversity of work styles and situations
- implement team management systems and structures that provide clear direction and support
- employ strategies that foster team engagement and performance.
Who will lead the course?
You’ll learn from:
Hamish Alexander – leadership educator and contemporary adult learning practitioner with extensive experience working in the public sector and and developing manager capability.
Format
New Managers is delivered online via four practical three-hour workshops, each focusing on aspects of good management practice. Sessions take place over 4 weeks to allow you time to apply new ideas in your workplace and reflect with peers to consolidate your learning.
