Professor Allan Fels, AO was inaugural Dean of ANZSOG from July 2003 until January 2013. Prior to that, he was Chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) from 1995 until 2003. Professor Fels was also Chairman of the Trade Practices Commission (TPC) from 1991 until 1995 and Chairman of the Prices Surveillance Authority from 1989 until 1992. He was Prices Commissioner, Victoria from 1982 until 1991 and has served on numerous other government bodies including as an Associate Commissioner for the Productivity Commission in 2009 for the inquiry into executive remuneration. He was appointed by the Victorian Government to head an inquiry into reform of the state’s taxi industry from 2011 to 2013 and was also a member of the Committee to review Commonwealth Parliamentary Entitlements in 2009/2010. Currently he chairs the Commonwealth Government Migrant Workers Taskforce. In New South Wales he is Electricity Prices Commissioner and Emergency Services Levy Insurance Monitor.
Prof Fels was Senior Lecturer in Economics at Monash University from 1972 until 1984. He was appointed as Professor of Administration at Monash University in 1984 and was the Director of the Graduate School of Management, Monash University from 1985 until 1990. He has been an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Business and Economics at Monash University since 1995 and a Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne since 2003, currently both at the Melbourne Law School and the Institute of Economic and Social Research. He is a visiting Professor at the Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment, Division of Social Sciences, Oxford University.
Prof Fels has degrees in economics and law from the University of Western Australia (UWA), and a PhD in Economics from Duke University. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia (ASSA).
Professor Fels is or has been a member of numerous advisory boards to the Australian, Victorian and other Governments. He is International Advisor, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Co-Director, China Competition Research Centre; and Co-Editor, China Competition Bulletin.
He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in June 2001.
